Import Taxes

Japan is not a free-trade country and imports and exports are subject to Japanese tariffs and taxes.

Summary

  • Any packages sent to Japan are subject to taxes.
  • Packages from individuals marked as gifts are less likely to be subject to taxes.
  • Small commercial packages with values of less than $200 are subject to simplified taxes.
  • Taxes are difficult to determine and may vary depending on the customs officer.

Basically, take goods out of original packaging and send as gifts for the lowest likelihood of taxes. Do not overstate the value of the goods!
